I was just reading again how Money Magazine named Cary, NC number five out of it’s 100 best places to live last year and I have to admit, I’m not surprised! They said:

People come to the Research Triangle area for opportunity. They settle in Cary because they can’t believe how pretty the place is. More than 30 parks and greenways dot the region, and regular arts and crafts festivals bring tens of thousands to the downtown area to browse. And, of course, there’s plenty of culture in nearby Raleigh. Cary residents don’t lack for jobs. Software maker SAS is based here, and about 50% of its 10,000 jobs are in the area. The city also has one of the country’s lowest crime rates.

And it’s true. When you talk to residents, they are always citing how beautiful the city is with all the trees and green parks. Cary is family friendly and family focused. Parks for playing, camping, hiking, biking and all the activity you can pack into a day less than a 20 minute drive. Where else can you have both the cool weather of the mountains and the warmth
of the summer’s ocean breeze less than 3 hours away?

As kids grow up and move away, it may be time for a smaller home! There are lots of charming, smaller square footage homes in Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Chapel Hill, and throughout the Triangle area. But if you’re moving from a larger home, you may be worried about feeling cramped in a smaller space.

With a few well-placed windows and built-ins, it is possible to make more of less! There are ways to use illusions to make you feel as though your house is larger than it really is. A recent article on MSN had these suggestions:

To add space . . . add a wall?

It’s intuitive to assume that to maximize space one would take out walls — but you can lose comfort in that spaciousness. Don’t chop up rooms a la old tract homes, but consider adding a wall that slightly breaks up a room, or putting a freestanding bookcase in the middle of a room, to make a space seem bigger.

Vary ceiling height

Altering the height of the ceiling, even within one room — lower at first, higher as one proceeds — creates a sense of entrance and welcome. A simple cloth hanging over a bed creates a different feeling of space and makes the area more intimate.

Layer your area

Though it’s counterintuitive, adding different elements in the middle-distance of a room — a pillar, a low bookcase — can act rather like punctuation marks in a sentence, slowing down the eye, and letting it experience the space.

Think like a sailor

Architects often refer to their smaller creations as sailboats, which have no wasted space. Look for opportunities for built-ins, such as bookshelf opportunities in staircases, cool cabinet possibilities, drawers under beds, etc.

Remember: Glass is good

In addition to letting in light, which is crucial to lending a house an airy feel, well-placed windows steal space from the outdoors and give it to the house. For a horizon view, place windows together at a corner of the house. Windows placed high on the wall so that people can’t see in also act to make space feel bigger, while bringing in natural light.

Though the National Association of Realtors reported that home values in North Carolina fell in the third quarter of 2007, the home resale values in Raleigh and Cary continued to increase.

While home values increase by $4,400 on average in Raleigh and Durham between the second and third quarter, home values in Durham dropped by $6,800 during the same time period.

And while Durham home prices have dropped, this trend is in line with the rest of the US. Home prices in 47 states dropped in the third quarter of 2007. This nationwide trend in depreciating home values makes buying real estate in Raleigh or Cary a smart choice right now.

In the housing market, some areas will continue to hold value and even increase in value despite an overall slump if the area is desirable enough.
