Raleigh’s Growing Artist Community
Raleigh NC is fast becoming a top location choice of young artists and quickly becoming the arts capital of the South with its ever growing artist community. Even some non-artists prefer buying homes in Raleigh NC because of its cultural diversity.
According to Raleigh’s mayor, Charles Meeker, art is strategic to the economic development of Raleigh NC. He also believes that art adds to the personality of the place and artists help to renew the areas that are not so well-developed.
As per researchers every $1 that is spent on promoting arts, yields $5 to the community due to the resulting economic activity. Due to increasing number of musicians, dancers, painters and other artists, Raleigh has seen a rise in condos and restaurants. Now Raleigh is among the Top 25 fastest-growing US cities in the last 3 years.
According to an urban researcher based in Washington, D.C, Steven Pedigo, cities are now realizing that making large investments in conference centers is not as profitable as encouraging arts. Shaun Richards, a former New York-based artist, believes that a city like Raleigh offers excellent opportunity and revelation that you can never experience in New York’s limited world of art. Shaun Richards works from a studio in Raleigh’s upcoming warehouse district. He further says that creative people can manage to live even with $25,000 a year.
Raleigh started Artist Relocation Program in 2000 and provides studio space and healthcare benefits at subsidized rates. As part of this relocation program Paducah, Ky., has brought 70 artists from Atlanta, Phoenix, and New York to its LowerTown art district.
